CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

Paul Feathers. Dolan liked his new name. He found it intriguing and amusing. Sticking his thumb out as he stood alongside the highway, he thought he would enjoy being Paul. A simple, likable guy. Your friendly neighbor. A man who would stop to pick up a hitchhiker. Karma, right?

Karma.

That was just a bunch of hooey. Payback. Cause and effect. That's what it was. And Dolan, or rather, Paul, was about to cause some effect.

A car slowed, about two hundred yards ahead.

Feathers smiled.

"Going north?" he called. He felt a surge of anticipation and excitement.

C'mon, he thought. C'mon. Stop for me.

The car slowed even more, creeping in his direction. It was perfect.

And then the car took off, speeding past him.

With a curse, Dolan waved his thumb again, stepping into the snowy road.

Sure enough, another car slowed. It was a dirt-stained Pajero SUV. And this one actually stopped, bumping up onto the snowy sidewalk.

"Thanks," he told the driver, getting into the passenger seat.

It was a young woman. She was wearing a heavy jacket and tight pants and boots. The tight pants rang a bell in his mind. Horse pants. This woman was a horse rider. He glanced around the car, noticing bandages and liniment, leather straps and saddle pads.

She smiled. "You're welcome."

Feathers smiled back. "Good of you to stop on such a cold night. Where you headed?"

"Kawartha Lakes. I'm going back to work. It was my day off today."

"You're a horse rider, right?"

She laughed. "Yes, I am, and more. I manage a big barn just outside the town. The job comes with thirty horses, three dogs, and shed loads of worry."

He liked her laugh. She was more entertaining than he'd expected.

"What's your name?"

"Mandy," she said. "What's yours?"

"Paul. Paul Feathers."

"Nice to meet you, Paul," she said. She reached over, offering him a hand.

He shook it. "Nice to meet you, too, Mandy."

He was watching her hands, her arms. She was a strong woman, but it wouldn't take too much to overpower her. This was a reliable car. It would blend in. It was a vehicle that could handle the roads.

"You're hitchhiking in this weather?" she asked.

"Yeah, I was on my way to visit a client, but my car broke down, so I'm just hopping in a ride. I'm going to spend the night in a motel. I'll sort out the car in the morning."

"Yeah. Definitely best to get out of this cold," she agreed.

Dolan could feel the adrenaline pumping through his body. The thrill of the hunt. The trick was to keep it together and not show anything.

At that moment, Mandy's phone rang. She grabbed it up.

"Hey, Nolene. I'm on my way home right now. What? No. I'm not going to stop for donuts. It's freezing out here and I'm giving a guy a ride into town. I'll make it home in no time."

She paused.

“You’re ten minutes behind me? Okay, I’ll drive slow and wait for you to catch up. Then we can both stop for donuts.”

She laughed. Cut the call.

"My work partner. She's also been out today.
